Lately I have been carried away solely for Westworld, and it's for a great measure. The HBO's 10 episodes new series are wrapped last night unlocking even more mystery and speculations, much for the whining of its many die-hard fans already.
In Westworld, highly advanced Artificial Intelligences (The Hosts) are assigned to specific roles in the narratives at Old Western theme park "Westworld" for the super-rich. Within, there are no rules to follow. The guests can be whoever and do whatever, even if that means a viscious rapist or psychotic killer as the AIs are not designed to fight back -- by one line of specific coding, at that.
The narrative of the hosts usually ends in a horrifying manner and that's never been a problem until now. For some reasons, a few hosts begin to realize the constructed lies they have been living. It is especially true with the oldest host, Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), who carries a deeper secret of the park from her deceased creator Arnold Weber. This very secret is also what keeping a mysterious man dubbed Man in Black to keep coming for 30 years. Them, to a reluctant guest William (Jimmi Simpson), too smart of a prositute host Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton), the Westworld's programmer Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), and a lot of entities with much diverse agendas covered back and forth, giving us a slight occurance of their possible mind.
Subjectively, it is everything straight from the movies I love. Science fiction slash the question of life and the mind games. Hints are here and there and all the theories afterwards are mindblowing. A lot of things make sense and don't at the same time. I find myself in awe thinking about how the loops are connected, and that's probably the furthest I could go without spoiling anything to you.
Westworld is indeed a brilliantly addictive masterpiece, and to describe it without continously praising creators Jonathan Nolan & wife Lisa Joy is utterly impossible. It is based on a 1973 movie of the same name by novelist Michael Crichton, and also co-produced by J.J. Abrams. Westworld is an ambitious project by the same people that blow our mind circa forever, and with that high kind of expectation, it manages to deliver more. If that's not described how good it is, I don't know what will.
Westworld Season Two is scheduled for 2018 debut.
x, Michelle
